From Uzzi to Adebayo: Who Ruled the Night at This Year’s AMVCA?
In a glittering ceremony celebrating the vibrancy of African cinema, Blessing Uzzi’s Freedom Way, an action thriller that explores the struggles of young Nigerians, was awarded Best Overall Movie at the 2025 Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA).
Awam Amkpa won Best Director for The Man Died, an adaptation of Wole Soyinka’s prison memoir. Seven Doors emerged as a standout winner, with Chioma Chukwuka and Femi Adebayo taking home Best Lead Actress and Best Lead Actor respectively.
An emotional Adebayo accepted his award with a simple, “Thank you, thank you.”
Mercy Aigbe and Kunle Afolayan were named Best Supporting Actress and Actor, respectively.
Hosted by Ik Osakioduwa and emerging presenter David Oke, the event showcased rising stars and featured a dynamic opening performance by the Dream Catchers dance group. Awards were presented in 27 categories, including 18 judged by panels and 9 voted for by the public.
Veteran actor Nkem Owoh and film producer Sani Muazu received Industry Merit Awards for their lasting impact on the industry, while the Trailblazer Award went to director Kayode Kasum, celebrated for Áfàméfùnà: An Nwa Boi Story and Far From Home. Filmmaker James Amuta accepted the award on his behalf.
Iyo Prosper Adokiye won Best Digital Content Creator for “We listen to, we don’t judge” but was absent. A light-hearted moment came when comedian Basketmouth jokingly expressed frustration over his film’s loss in the writing category.
In the newly introduced Best Score category, Tolu Obanro won for his work on Seven Doors.
