House of Reps Advances Bill to Strip VP, Governors of Immunity

A bill seeking to remove immunity for Nigeria’s vice president, governors, and their deputies has passed second reading in the House of Representatives. The bill aims to enhance accountability, curb corruption, and eliminate impunity in public office.

Among other constitutional amendment bills debated on Wednesday were proposals to separate the offices of the Attorney-General of the Federation from the Minister of Justice, and those of state attorneys-general from commissioners for justice.

Additionally, proposals for the creation of new states, including Ijebu, Ife-Ijesa, Tiga, Orlu, and Etiti, also passed second reading.

The bills bring the total number of constitutional amendment proposals that have cleared this stage to 81.
