Newcastle End 70-Year Trophy Wait, Defeat Liverpool to Win League Cup

Dan Burn and Alexander Isak ended Newcastle United’s 70-year wait for silverware as they secured a 2-1 victory over Liverpool in the League Cup final on Sunday.
Local favourite Burn headed the Magpies into the lead just before half-time, and Isak’s 23rd goal of the season seven minutes after the restart sealed Newcastle’s first domestic trophy since the 1955 FA Cup, despite a late strike from Liverpool substitute Federico Chiesa.
Newcastle, whose last major triumph was the 1969 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, fully deserved their Wembley victory against a lacklustre Liverpool side that has won the competition ten times.
Eddie Howe’s side capitalised on the opportunity in front of a packed Wembley crowd of 88,513, making him the first English manager to win a domestic trophy since Harry Redknapp in 2008.
Bruno Guimarães hailed the triumph as one of the greatest moments of his life. “This means everything to the fans; they deserve it,” he told Sky Sports. “I wanted to make history at this club, and we’ve done it. This is one of the best days of my life.”
Despite a late push from Liverpool, Newcastle held firm to claim their long-awaited victory, marking a new era of success for the club.
