Senior Prison Officials Suspended Over Bobrisky Bribery

The Federal Government has suspended several senior officers of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) following bribery allegations linked to the controversial cross-dresser Idris Okuneye, better known as Bobrisky.

In a viral video, blogger Martins Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan, alleged that officers of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) received ₦15 million from Bobrisky to drop money laundering charges against him. The accusations stem from an April incident during which Bobrisky was sentenced to six months in prison for an alleged naira-spraying offence.

The blogger also claimed that Bobrisky paid millions of naira to secure preferential treatment during his time in custody.

Bobrisky has denied the allegations, and both the EFCC and the NCoS have launched investigations into the claims.

On Thursday, the Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire, and Immigration Services Board confirmed the suspension of several senior officials, pending further investigation. The statement, signed by Ja’afaru Ahmed, indicated that the suspension was triggered by the viral video exposing the alleged misconduct.

Among the suspended officers are Michael Anugwa, Deputy Controller of Corrections at the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Kirikiri, Lagos, and Sikiru Adekunle, Deputy Controller of Corrections at the Maximum Security Custodial Centre, Kirikiri.

Additionally, the Board has suspended ASC II Ogbule Samuel Obinna of the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Afikpo, Ebonyi State, for allegedly escorting a convicted inmate outside the facility.

In another related development, Iloafonsi Kevin Ikechukwu, Deputy Controller of Corrections at the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Kuje, Abuja, has also been suspended for allegedly receiving money on behalf of an inmate.
