Lagos Doctors Threaten Strike Over Colleague’s Death
Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Lagos branch, has declared an indefinite strike in response to the tragic death of one of its members, Dr. Diaso Vwaere. Dr. Vwaere, a medical house officer at the General Hospital, Odan, Lagos, passed away on August 1st due to injuries sustained in an elevator crash from the 10th floor of the hospital building.
In a statement jointly signed by Dr. Benjamin Olowojebutu, the Chairman, and Dr. Ajibowo Ismail, the Secretary of NMA Lagos, the association directed medical doctors in three government hospitals on Lagos Island, including General Hospital, Odan; Lagos Island Maternity Hospital; and Massey Street Children’s Hospital, to join the strike. This action will continue until investigations into the cause of Dr. Vwaere’s death are completed, and justice is served.
According to the NMA, Dr. Vwaere was trapped in the elevator for over 40 minutes before being rescued. The association was informed that there was no blood available for resuscitation, which has become a recurring issue due to government policy changes on blood donation.
NMA believes this tragedy could have been prevented and expressed deep sorrow and mourning for the loss of a young colleague who could have served thousands of Nigerians if given the chance.
NMA calls for an immediate and unbiased investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident and demands that all those found responsible, especially the General Manager of the Lagos State Infrastructure Management Agency, Ms. Adenike Adekambi, be brought to justice.
As a mark of respect for their late colleague, NMA has asked all doctors in other government hospitals in the state to scale down activities for the next five days, providing only emergency services.
The association also appeals to the government to prioritize an overhaul of the house officers’ quarters on the Island and address infrastructure issues in all government hospitals. Furthermore, NMA urges the government to revamp the blood transfusion system in the state to enhance service quality.
NMA assures its colleagues that the leadership in Lagos State is actively handling the situation and is committed to ensuring justice is served and seen to be served.
The association extends its condolences to Dr. Vwaere’s family, her colleagues on the Island, the Medical Guild, and all doctors in the state, while offering prayers for strength to bear the irreparable loss.
